This light and fresh classic moscow mule recipe is made with just 3 ingredients (plus optional garnishes). It’s the perfect light and refreshing cocktail and great for a warm day!

This is one of my Drink recipes I know you’ll want to keep on hand!

It may not be officially spring, but here in the Midwest, it’s been in the 60’s, which makes me feel in the mood for some warm weather cocktails!

I have plenty of drinks to sip on on a warm day, but I wanted to share a classic with you today.

The moscow mule. It’s traditionally served in copper mugs with plenty of crushed/nugget ice, and the outside of the mugs gets so frosty.

This classic cocktail is made using just 3 ingredients… that’s right… three!

Plus you don’t need any fancy equipment, no cocktail shaker, no muddler, etc. Just add everything to the cup and stir.

What do I need to make this recipe?

ingredients needed to make a moscow mule.
  • Vodka – I find it’s best to use a middle of the road vodka for this. The other ingredients have a strong flavor, so using a top-shelf vodka would be a waste, and using bargain vodka may not taste as good. Smirnoff and Titos are the two vodka brands I like to use for this cocktail.
  • Lime juice – the tartness of lime juice is perfect to cut through and compliment the ginger flavors. Fresh is definitely best though.
  • Ginger beer – ginger beer generally packs a punch, as the flavor comes from strong ginger. There are several brands available, and despite the Reed’s brand pictured here, I typically use Fever-Tree. However, both brands work well in this recipe.
  • Garnishes – these are optional, but make the cocktail feel like something you ordered at a fancy restaurant. We like to use a lime slice and a sprig of fresh mint.

Helpful Tip!

Feel free to use any type of ice that you like. We absolutely love the nugget style ice cubes, but you can make this drink with any kind of ice that’ll fit in the mugs.

Variations of this recipe

  • Citrus – instead of lime juice, you could try lemon juice.
  • Fruit juice – a fun seasonal variation would be to use about an ounce of a fruit juice (pineapple, orange, apple cider, watermelon, cranberry etc).
  • Sweeter – if you prefer a sweeter cocktail, feel free to add a splash of simple syrup (you can make this or buy it from the store).
  • Other liquors – while not a traditional moscow mule, there are several variations of this cocktail that use different liquors and have different names!
    • Mexican mule – use tequila in place of vodka.
    • Irish mule – use Irish whiskey in place of vodka.
    • Kentucky mule – use bourbon in place of vodka.
    • Gin mule – use gin in place of vodka.

FAQ’s

Why is it called a moscow mule?

From what I can gather, the name comes from the fact that vodka comes from Russia, and the ginger beer has a “kick”, like a mule. Despite the name though, this drink originated in America.

Do you have to use copper mugs for a moscow mule?

Absolutely not. This drink can be served in any glass or cup. Traditionally, they are served in a copper mug, which is not only pretty, but functional. Copper takes on the cold temperature of the drink, so taking a sip of an icy cold drink, with a frosted mug and with the the icy cold rim of the mug makes it tastes super refreshing!

Making a moscow mule cocktail ahead of time

This drink comes together super quickly, so there’s no need to make it ahead. Plus any fizziness from the ginger beer will be lost.

However, if you’re using fresh lime juice, that can be squeezed ahead of time and kept refrigerated.

This light and fresh classic moscow mule recipe is made with just 3 ingredients (plus optional garnishes). It's the perfect light and refreshing cocktail and great for a warm day!

Storage

Any leftover cocktails should be stored in the refrigerator and enjoyed within 1-2 days.

The ginger beer will likely go flat, so you might want to add an extra splash when you drink the leftover mule.

My Favorite Moscow Mule Mugs!

You absolutely don’t have to serve this cocktail in a copper mug, but it’s a traditional and gorgeous way to serve these drinks.

This light and fresh classic moscow mule recipe is made with just 3 ingredients (plus optional garnishes)!

Ingredients

Cocktail

  • 2 oz cold vodka we like to use Smirnoff or Titos (about 1/4 cup)
  • 1/2 oz lime juice fresh is best (about 1 Tbsp)
  • 4 oz cold ginger beer we like to use Fever-Tree or Reed's (about 1/2 cup)

To serve

  • ice we like to use nugget-style ice, but crushed also works well
  • lime slices for garnish
  • fresh mint for garnish

Instructions

  • Fill a copper mug (or other glass) with ice.
  • Pour in the vodka, then lime juice, then ginger beer.
  • You can drink it as is, or give it a gentle stir.
  • Garnish if desired, and serve ice cold.

Chef Tips

  1. This recipe makes enough for one cocktail, but can easily be scaled up for as many cocktails as you’d like.
  2. For an even frostier drink, chill your copper mugs before making the cocktail.

Large batch:

  • I don’t recommend making a large batch with the ginger beer, because any carbonation will be gone.
  • However you can mix up a large batch (however many drinks you want, multiply the ingredient amount by that number), of the vodka and lime juice.
  • Stir it well, then cover and chill for several hours, or up to 2 days.
  • When ready to serve, pour 2.5 oz of the mixture into a mug filled with ice, and then pour in 4 oz ginger beer.

I love a good Moscow Mule. We’re having a party this weekend, and I’m using this in place of my usual recipe. I made one last night as a test and it was great!
